2006 Commonwealth Games

The Games are over.

The medal tally, for the Commonwealth Games held over 11 days in Melbourne,
there were 40 nations who won medals, some, like Kenya and Nigeria simply
dominate in certain events, (distance running) others, who fielded very small
teams were ecstatic when they won or were placed in their events.

While Australia had the largest team, the domination was more than had been
expected, our lady swimmers were superb, (the men did not fare at all well
with only 1 gold, part of the reason for this was because Ian Thorpe had to
withdraw for health reasons) the cyclists and divers also were above
expectations.

As has been the case when we have staged any major sporting event these
Games were rated as the best ever, (as was the case at the conclusion of
the Sydney Olympics in 2000)

Melbourne managed to turn on perfect weather, (this is not something that
Melbourne is known for!!) the volunteers who pitched in to assist with every
detail were superb, the venues were all turned out to perfection, the crowds
were both large and well behaved, the atmosphere between the athletes was
excellent as were their performances.

You just might be able to detect the sound of a very proud Australian here
if you look and listen closely.

Bravo to our Aussie friends. Dominance indeed. I'm surprised at the fall off from England to Canada.

Hi Peter ~~ A good summary of the games. They were great viewing.
As well as Thorpey being out, so too was
Grant Hackett. Left the men a bit on the outer. Always next time in India.
Cheers, Merle.

Peter ~ Ever since we had that Party in our Boston Harbor, we just don't get invited to these games anymore! Congratulations though! ~ jb///

Looks like everyone who participated got at least 1 medal; Australia did it up right!

Too bad the Thorpido had to pull out.
He's a great swimmer!

personal update:
Our weekend was a whirlwind. The 50th anniversary dinner party was wonderful, and Courtney's media presentation made everyone cry. It was a lot of work for all of us, but it was worth it.
Courtney had her sinus surgery on Monday morning, and she is doing well. She's got a drippy, bloody nose, but her pain is not bad. She will be fully recovered in about a week.

Your countrymen were impressive. Quite a gap between Australia and England, one more than double. That must have felt pretty good for everyone down under.
