Fun Monday Dec 17

Fun Monday is hosted this week by Kitten's Homeschool

Da rules are.

It is my great pleasure to be the hostess for Fun Monday next week. I think it would be neat to hear about the story behind your home and the road you live on. It doesn't have to be historical, maybe just something that stands out to you. It would be nice to have pictures to go with your little story. I also would like to know who has the oldest house. Whoever has the oldest house will get a little Christmas treat from little ole me.

My house is a “Queenslander” which broadly speaking describes a timber house which is built elevated on wooden stumps to allow for plenty of under house ventilation, there was originally verandahs on three sides, actually front, back and one side, two of these have since been enclosed leaving just the front open except for my office area.

Queenslanders are timber homes in the true sense of the word with internal walls and ceilings lined with 4 inch X 5/8 inch tongued and grooved boards, they have high (11 foot) ceilings, again for better ventilation during our hot and humid Summers.

My house is located just over half a mile from the heart of town on a road that is actually an extension of Gympie’s main street, it runs almost due North – South so I get lovely sunny mornings on my front verandah before the Summer sun gets too much heat to it, I have mentioned before that there is a Nestles factory about half a mile from my back door, where they make “Golden Roast Coffee”, when they are doing certain processing and the breeze is right the whole house is filled with a beautiful coffee aroma.

This house was built during the 1930s so its approximately 70 years old, it has been lovingly tended and is in very good condition so should last for another 70 years at least.

Some photos of my Home and its location.

Looking North during Spring is a joy with the Jackaranda's in bloom.

This is what it looks like from the front.

Looking to the West from my back porch, the coffee aromas come from the
building on the right skyline.

This is a very similar shot taken at sunset from the porch, pretty isn't it?

This internal shot shows the timber paneling and open layout.

The lovely front verandah with the suns shadows creeping into my breakfast nook.

Looking from the other direction later in the day.

Peter,
The setting of your home looks fabulous. I love the street lined with Jacarandas and your other views. I'd love to smell coffee on the breeze! Blessings...

hey pilgrim.. ha ha ha. I remember the Duke saying that.

better ventilation... is that so the floor won't rot or something???

I think some of the houses in the Southern part of the US do that, too. I thought it was in case the creek overflowed. (:

It really looks very nice and also strange to me. I only saw wooden houses when I was in the USA. In Europe all houses are in bricks. Except in the Scandinavian countries. But in Belgium there are no wooden houses at all.

Gorgeous house... my house is called a "Colonial" as it has two floors, with sleeping rooms upstairs and all else downstairs.
Full basement and two car garage. Not sure if I have a picture.. I'll dig around.

Very lovely home and views. I love that Jackaranda tree. We have timber panel walls and some on the ceilings as well, some stained, some painted. I saw some of the Queenslander homes when I was in Queensland, just didn't know they were called that. Very nice and I am glad you added photos, I was hoping as I read that there would be some.

I've always wanted a verandah - I don't know why, but I do. Looks so tropical compared to what I see every day.
