About 18 months ago I bought a 42 inch flat screen TV with all the bells and whistles, I had owned and enjoyed this TV for a little over 12 months when suddenly... NO PICTURE... it still had sound but I thought it was a bit too large and expensive for a radio, I was cursing my luck that it waited until the warranty was up before it died, however further investigation revealed that it had a 3 year warranty, WOW!!! good luck for a change, so I took it to the manufacturers recommended repair shop.
It must have been happy there because it stayed there for a Looong time, after several phone calls where I heard of, parts shortage, shipping delays and the like... I finally got my TV back, and joy of joys it all seemed to be working fine.... well except that I now had to switch between TV and "Components" to watch a DVD... Ah well, I can live with that!!!
Wazza rang me a few nights ago to tell me there was a movie which he knew I would like to see on TV, it didn't start until 11.40 pm so he suggested I record it and watch it later... too easy ... so far, I began to wonder how I could achieve this with my current TV/ DVD setup... the short answer was that I couldn't!!!
Sooo.. I sat up and watched it, only missing a couple of very brief bits somewhere about 1.00 AM.
Now at long last we can get to the DIY part of this story....
The next day I determined that I would fix this problem!!!! I opined that it must be in the reconnection of the not inconsiderable number of cables to the TV when I got it back from the repair shop so this became my starting point, after unsuccessfully trying every possible combination with no joy I pulled ALL of the cables from both the TV and the DVD... got out the manuals and started from scratch, we have been at this for about 2 hours by this time!!!!
Over the next two hours with some varying degrees of success, this only after reprogramming the DVD from scratch, I had ALL the pictures working as they should.... but no sound when on the DVD, another read through the manuals gave no clue as to why this was so, creative thinking came into play... there are PLENTY of spare terminals on both the TV and the DVD I'll just connect another pair of audio cables and try that (I have PLENTY of spare cables having ripped them all of a couple of hours ago!!!) beyond belief, EVERYTHING is working perfectly on the TV and the DVD, including the ability to record things from TV to DVD, all that remained to be done was to sort the channels into the order that I like them in.... a brief hour later this had been achieved and I settled back for some viewing a contented man.
For regular readers... You just know that's not all, don't you??
My system used to be hooked up through the "Home Theater" system... it is now working (albeit perfectly) through the rather excellent speakers of the TV set, so until I watch the next "blockbuster action show" on DVD and am disappointed by the lack of room shaking reverberated sound and decide to reconnect the "Home Theater System" all is well at holtieshouse.... Oh! God! You're a brave man than me, Gunga Din! When it comes to attempting all of what you've described, I ring up my friendly "he-who-knows-all-about-TVs-VCRS/DVDs" guy and get him to do it for me.
His charges are worth it! I have no expertise and even less patience when it comes to doing jobs like that!

Oh my God, Peter I can't believe you had the balls to do this. I remember the number of times you've done this before and the one and only occasion I tried to help you too. This ended up with a lot of swearing and threats of tossing it all out the door. You also had a service man come in one time to do it for you, and now I've missed all the fun of this attempt. Methinks the air may of turned "blue" during some of this "fun time"
Anyway good on you for giving it a go and you nearly got it all right.

I'm curious Peter. You record things to DVD, or to a DVR? (Digital Video Recorder)
If to DVD, are they re-writable?

God, I wouldn't even try that. However, I do have a electronics fixer upper not too far from here whom I can yell for when things aren'
t working perfectly. He doesn't even need to read the instructions!
Anyway I'm glad all is working well now.
Wow - it boggles the mind.
All you need is to hire a teenager to mow your lawn and then say "how about a cold drink in the house?" Then you know what to do from there.
Messing with electronics is a skill that we all have that's kinda like having sex. It eventually will fade away so hook up as many tv sets as you can while you're young. I say.
