Visiting Cockatoo's

Gympie has been visited by a large flock of Cockatoo's over the past week, my palm tree and the overhead power cables became a playground for these happy little show offs and they were not in the least put off by me and my camera

Please click on photos to enbiggen them, its worth the effort!!

These guys are Little Corella's sometimes known as bare eyed Corella's, one of the smaller varieties of Cockatoo, they are a close relative to the pink and gray Galah.
The flock visiting Gympie is a small one with only about 100 birds, the flocks in outback Australia can number in the thousands the raucous screeching of a flock this size is almost deafening.
They have a quite small white crest, a light pink tinge to their neck feathers and a yellow tinge under the wings.

They are noisy and love to show off with some spectacular acrobatic displays swinging from overhead cables by either their beaks or their feet.

They took a fancy to my Palm tree but did it no real harm, this is not always the case as they can be quite destructive to some of the trees they feed or roost in overnight

This photo shows a flurry of birds and wires

Not from the same day but I included it to show the lovely pink chest feathers of the Galah, the sight of a flock in flight wheeling from left to right, just because they can and they seem to know how impressive they look, is one of natures wonders.

Hi Peter ~~ I'm first commenter.
I had a flock of white cockatoos fly over the last couple of days, screeching their lungs out. Guess they were off to create havoc nearby
somewhere. I am OK - only had 3 days of new tablet - still short of breath
and swelling about the same. Early days yet. Good photos. Take care, Love, Merle.

Watching the cockatoos must be better than TV!

Peter, it's amazing the amount and variety of bird life that is now inhabiting the cities.
I guess a lot of it has to do with the drought conditions in the outback and the lack of food that is available.

Yes. I had a flock of bloody cockatoos wake me up the other morning when I was trying to have a lie in. As I very rarely get to do that, I was not impressed. Noisy sods.

We also have a lot of galahs. Brainless birds but as you say, very pretty. I love carellas, they're such acrobatic characters and very entertaining to watch. Glad they didn't demolish your palm tree.
