Australia Day 2008

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Australia Day, January 26, is the biggest day of celebration in the country and is observed as a
public holiday in all states and territories.

On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and
being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud
of in our great nation.

It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.

Among the many things this day stands for, there is the Queen's and the Australian
Governments honors list recognizing the people who have made contributions to society
and nation during the last 12 months, we welcome many new Australian citizens on this
day with naturalization ceremony's in all States and Territories.
Today is the main day for the year for the "Keep Australia Beautiful Council" who among
other things conduct the "Tidy Towns" competition each year.

Don't be un-Australian, eat lamb on Australia Day Week. (sorry Sam)

There is a media personality, ex AFL football player, Sam Kekovich, who has been the
spokesman for the Lamb marketing arm of Meat and Livestock Australia for several years,
Sam is as controversial now as he was in his playing days this latest ad campaign among
other things manages to suggest that New Zealand’s Prime Minister Helen Clark does a good
impersonation of a man.

Love him or loathe him Sam is a part of the Australian psyche and the ad campaigns have been
very successful.

I have included a link to the latest ad, have a look at it and make up your own minds. (please keep
in mind that our national sense of humor is a cross between ironic and moronic and much of what
is said is very much tongue in cheek stuff.)

YouTube - Eat Lamb during "Australia Week 08" (Sam Kekovich)

What it means to be Australian.

While most of these start with “Only in Australia” we are quite prepared to admit that other parts of the world have people and habits as strange as ours, on a per capita basis we just have more of them. Being Australian is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then traveling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

Only in Australia can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Australia do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a DIET coke.

Only in Australia do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters.

Only in Australian do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

Only in Australia do we use answering machines to screen calls but then have "call waiting" so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

Only in Australia are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink.

AND DID YOU KNOW......

3 Aussies die every year testing if a 9 volt battery works… on their tongue

142 Aussies were injured last year by not removing all the pins from new shirts

58 Aussies are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers

31 Aussies have died since 2003 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in

8 Aussies had serious burns last year trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth

A massive 543 Aussies were admitted to Emergency in the last two years after opening bottles of beer with their teeth

Last year, 8 Aussies cracked their skull whilst throwing up in the toilet.

Someone finally said it.

How many are actually paying attention to this?

There are Aboriginals, ,Torres Strait Islanders, Kiwis, Lebanese , Asians, Arabs, Boat People from all over the place., etc.

And then there are... Australians.

You pass me on the street and sneer in my Direction.

You Call me " Australian Dog", "White boy", "Cracker", "Skippy", "Whitey",
"Caveman" . And that's OK. But when I call you, Black Fella, Kiwi, Towel
head, Sand-nigger, Sheep Shagger ,Camel Jockey, Gook, or Chink,

You call Me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the
Housing Commission Estates (where you live) the most dangerous places to Live?

You have the Aboriginal Schools. You have Sorry Day. You Have Yom Hashoah ,You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), .We'd be racists.

If we had a White Pride Day .. You would call us Racists.

If we had White Culture Month, we'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites to"advance" OUR lives . We'd be racists.

If we had a University fund that only gave white Students scholarships.....
You know we'd be racists.

"White colleges" ..THAT would be a racist college.

You can march for your race and rights. If we marched for our Race and
rights, You would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and Orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our White pride .You call us racists.

You rob us, bash our kids, steal from us, and shoot at us.
But, when a white police officer shoots a Muslim gang member or beats up a Lebanese Drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, You call him a racist.

I am proud.
But, you call me a racist.
Why is it that only whites can be racists?

I'm sorry this post got a bit long winded and ran off in many different directions its the
national fervor coming out I guess... enjoy your day.

Hi Peter -- I hope you will have a 'Seven Day Australia Day' holiday. That would be nice.

I have to agree with you on much of what you said.

Very true. Sad but true. It works both ways. There are good and bad everywhere. One thing I have learned though is the ones who behave in such a way are pretty much the same class of people, no matter where they come from.

A racist is a racist and a dickhead is a dickhead.

Hi Peter ~~ Good post again ~ We should have Australia Day more often.
Robyn sent me that thing about Racism too. There are good and bad in every race - even Australian!! Can you believe? I hope you are having a great Australia Day. I had Geoff and Jo visit, also John and Heather and we all popped over to Lorraine's
Garage Sale. Take care, Love, Merle.

Hey Peter, brag all you want but just remember...WE HAVE BRITTNEY SPEARS.

Lots of good stuff here including the ad. Now I've got to go get those lamb chops out of the freezer. I forgot about them.

I just read the last two posts Peter. You'll be pleased to know that "An Aussie Gentleman" is what I use for a mouse pad compliments of my niece who lives in Perth. She went there for one semester of college and ended up married to a Perthvert. (A name I coined and she still embraces btw.)
You'll also be pleased to know that I recognized the Man From Snowy River because as I have said before I have that committed to memory. A man must have something to fill the brain you know.
