Fun Monday June 16

Jan who is head honcho of the Prytz family is our hostess,
http://www.theprytzfamily.com/

Here’s da rules.

I will host Fun Monday on June 16th. The subject is walls. We all have walls of some sort. What I want to hear about and see, if you're going to show off your amazing photo skills, is what is on your walls, what color are your walls, what is special about them, what is your favorite or least favorite, is it inside or outside. You get the idea, let's show and tell about walls.

To begin this weeks challenge let me try to explain what is different about my walls;

I live in a house whose style is called "a Queenslander", (a) because it is in Queensland,
and (b) because it is a style of house designed to suit the Queensland weather pattern
which during summer is hot and humid and for the rest of the year is usually mild and
pleasantly warm.

"Queenslanders" were designed to be built mainly from timber, set on high stumps to
take advantage of cooling under floor breezes, with high ceilings to dissipate the hot
air within the house, with wide veranda's to offer shade and shelter.

Outer walls that are under the cover of the veranda's are constructed with a single
thickness of timber lining boards, similar to tongue and groove floor boards, which are
fixed vertically to a top plate, 2 mid rails and to a floor joist below floor level for
better insulating properties, if they are internal walls they are fixed to a floor plate
at the bottom.

The walls that are exposed to the elements are lined with the same boards but are
then covered externally with horizontal boards that we call weather-boards, (maybe
"siding" in the USA???) these overlapping boards allow rain to run off them and also
offer better insulation because of the air gap between the surfaces.

click on all photos to enbiggen them.

In this photo you can see the 2 mid rails on the side walls and the wall in the near foreground
while the wall in the background is without the rails.

This shows the other side of that same wall and here the rails are shown on the outside,
this is because this is an outer wall under the cover of the veranda.

Here we see the "weather-boards" that cover walls that are exposed to the elements,
it also shows the high stumps that give rise to the style known as "high-set".

As far as internal decoration is concerned, being a movie nut The Duke gets a spot.

As does the lovely Marilyn Monroe (several spots in fact!!!)

A nice wall plaque that I found at a local craft village.

And of course one of my son Marcus' paintings.

You can see other players walls by following the link to Jan's site.

Peter,
Your post was quite instructive. I do like the style of your home; it seems so light and airy. Marcus' painting is grand. Does he paint professionally?

I always dreamed of owning a Queenslander house, one with the balcony all the way around. I imagined my babies riding there bikes round and round and round even in the rain! Never happened though! Sigh! I will just admire yours which is very nice indeed.

I also love Marcus' painting the best, I have quite a few such masterpieces from my kids on the walls but I have broken da rules this week and taken everyone outside instead.

Have a great day, hugs to you and Vicki!

First of all Peter, the exterior of your home is beautiful! And what's inside your home is also just as beautiful. It looks like the most relaxing and wonderful comfort zone...a great place to call home! Fantastic. [I love that you have a movie wall...here in our home, we have a movie ROOM...with Gone With the Wind mostly, but also, Casablanca, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars, and more --all either knick knacks or paintings and ceramic plates.]

Come see my walls if you dare.

My mother has always loved the Duke! I was raised on his movies and almost named Secora after one of his leading ladies.

Love your son's painting!

And thanks for the explanation of why your house is built like it is. I always wondered about the "treehouses". :)

I need a closer inspection -- although you've shown your house before I haven't quite figured out the siding and inside walls --

I suppose Marilyn covers your favorite spots.

Good description of what a Queenslander is, Peter, (apart from a person who lives in Qld).

I didn't realise Marcus was a painter. I really like that one.

Hope all is well with you.

So now we know what a queenslander is! How well it suits where you live. Personally, I've always wanted beadboard walls, yours look to be a variation. Love Fun Mondays because we learn some unexpected things about people from all over.

P.S. Not surprised that YOU have one wall dedicated to Marilyn!

This is similar to the beach houses we have here (before they got all upscale and depended mainly on AC to keep cool!) They were the best houses to be in because you could open it up and take advantage of nature's cooling systems.

I LOVE your son's painting! Looks a bit like some of my husband's work.
